Miata, it's in the name. Miata Is Always The Answer. Track days, racing, enduros, even off-roading. Here are some things we've learned over the many years of racing and enjoying this platform from casual track days, driver coaching to all out sprint racing and even 24 hour endurance race events. Endurance racing a Mazda MX5 Miata in budget and semi-pro series—such as ChampCar, Lemons, WRL, AER, or Lucky Dog—is one of the most rewarding ways to get on track. Shifting from 20-minute track days or sprint races to 7- to 24-hour endurance events introduces completely different failure points. Luckily this is the best supported chassis and community in the world! This guide outlines essential car preparation, critical mechanical focus areas, and a comprehensive spares strategy to ensure your team spends its time on the track rather than turning wrenches in the paddock.

1. Reliability & Preparation Checklist
Endurance racing is not about outright lap time; it is about keeping the car off of the jack stands and out on track having fun. Address these foundational systems before your vehicle ever turns a wheel at a track.

Cooling System (The #1 Miata Killer)
The stock Miata cooling path inherently starves cylinders 3 and 4 of fresh coolant, which is exacerbated during prolonged endurance stints.
* **Coolant Reroute:** Essential for NA and NB models pushing more than stock power, to route cool water through the back of the cylinder head, normalizing engine temperatures across all cylinders. Not necessary for basic track days.
* **NA/NB heater cores:** if you still have one, these are a pain to replace and like to develop leaks. Recommend to carry a bypass hose and fittings in case this happens at the track.
* **Aluminum Cross-Flow Radiator:** Even an eBay aluminum radiator can do the trick at stock power levels, clean coolant + distilled water and straight clean radiator fins are essential. For NCs, replace old plastic-tank with either new OEM plastic or an aluminum one, since these need to hold pressure.
* **Sealing and Ducting:** Block all gaps between the mouth of the bumper and the radiator face using aluminum or plastic sheeting. Air must be forced *through* the core, not around it. Ensure that all of the OEM plastic air guides and undertray are in place to start with.
* **Hose Maintenance:** Check / replace every single rubber heater and coolant hose as needed—including the infamous "Cursed water plug" under the 1.6L CAS/exhaust side—with high-quality silicone or fresh rubber. https://www.miata.net/garage/waterplug.html

Drivetrain & Lubrication
* **Oil Management:** Miatas running high-G long sweepers on sticky tires can experience brief oil starvation. Keep oil topped off slightly above the "Full" line on the dipstick, usually 1/2 to 3/4 quart over fill is good. A good oil filter is key as well, to ensure sustained high rpm oil flow. Wix XP and similar are my go to.
* **Transmission and Differential:** Endurance racing subjects the manual transmission and differential to immense, sustained thermal breakdown. Use premium synthetic fluids and change them after every major endurance weekend. Fluid is cheaper and easier than swapping a trans or diff .
* **Exhaust Clearance:** Ensure the exhaust is shielded appropriately where it runs close to the transmission tunnel to prevent excessive interior heat, which can cook the driver especially on NA/ NB. Also, ensure that there are no leaks that can heat up the driver and even the gas tank.

Suspension & Hubs
* **Wheel Bearings & Hubs:** High-grip tires place extreme lateral loads on front hubs, causing structural fatigue of stock cast metals over multiple sessions. Upgraded front hubs are non-negotiable for serious racing. Rear hubs should be checked as well, as these fail without warning and are often self damaging. Upgrading to our Billet Enduro Hubs is easily the most common approach. Benefit of our billet hubs is also a stiffer hub that holds alignment numbers and eliminates brake pad knockback due to hub flex.
* **Eccentric Bolts:** Standard alignment bolts love to slip when pounding curbs over an 8-hour race. Use fresh OEM hardware and witness-mark them clearly during tech inspection so you can spot slippage instantly. Tighten them as tight as you can get them with a 1/2 drive long handle.

2. Brake Setup for Multi-Hour Stints
A properly set-up Miata braking system can easily survive a full 7-to-14-hour weekend without a pad change, maximizing track position.
* **Pads & Rotors:** Run high-end endurance pad compounds matched for the temp range and tire / aero grip, paired with plain, high-quality blank rotors. Avoid drilled or slotted rotors, which develop stress cracks quickly under thermal cycling.
* **Brake Ducting:** Route 2.5-inch to 3.0-inch flexible ducting from the high-pressure zones on the front bumper directly to the center of the front rotor hats.
* **Caliper Preparation:** Check brake caliper seals for leaks, the outer dust seal is normal to crack and fall apart, but the inner fluid seal should not leak any fluid. For rear calipers, ensure the mechanical e-brake adjustment mechanism is backed off or removed if allowed by rules to eliminate unnecessary pad drag. Ensure that caliper guide pins have minimal play and that pad guide are smooth to prevent hang ups. You can remove the guides as well but there will be some noise.
* **Fluid: Fully flush out old brake fluid at least once a year, with good high quality fluid for your temperature range. For a stock Miata, Castrol GT is a LMA (low moisture absorbent) fluid that is both readily available and good. Going up from there is either 600 or 660 wet boiling point offerings. Be sure to use an open bottle within the year it was opened to avoid water.
* **Brake lines: fully inspect and replace any and all rubber lines if there's a question, cracking etc. Stainless lines are readily available and give a peace of mind over rubber for not much money.

3. The Ultimate Endurance Spares Package
When a component fails at 3:00 PM on Saturday, your race depends entirely on what is sitting in your support trailer. Separate your spares into what stays in the pit box for rapid replacement and what lives in the paddock support area.

Hot Pit Box Spares (For Instant Swaps)
These items should be pre-assembled and ready to drop onto the car mid-race:
| **Brakes** | Pre-bedded Pads & Front Rotors | Assemble pads into a spare set of calipers or zip-tie them together so they are bedded and ready to slide over hot rotors. |
| **Suspension** | Hub Assembly | Keep at least 1 single complete front hub and spindle nut handy and an both entire rear upright fully assembled with bearing and hub, one for each rear corner. Our Billet Enduro hubs largely reduce this need but racing happens and it's always good to have spares especially if there's contact.
| **Electrical** | Fuses, Relays & Jumper Packs | A selection of main engine bay fuses and common relays (Fuel Pump, Main) taped inside the lid of the bin as well as the diagram for your car. | OEM electronics only, do not attempt to use Aftermarket ECM, MAF, CAS, etc as these are usually bad out of the box. Used or New OEM is always best.
| **Fluids** | Engine Oil & Distilled Water | 2 quarts of engine oil and a jug of water for rapid top-offs during mandatory pit stops. |

Paddock / Support Trailer Spares
If these components fail, you will give up track position, but a organized crew can swap them and save the weekend:
* **Powertrain:** Complete spare alternator (with tested voltage regulator), starter motor, and an extra clutch slave/master cylinder kit (pre-bled bench assembly if possible).
* **Ignition & Sensors:** Extra set of spark plugs, spark plug wires, a known-good Camshaft Position Sensor (CAS), and a Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) all OEM, no aftermarket.
* **Belts and Hoses:** A full set of secondary accessory belts (alternator/water pump), timing belt kit and a complete assortment of molded coolant hoses.
* **Suspension Arms:** At least one spare upper and lower front control arm, along with spare tie-rod ends.
* **A spare oil cap and gas cap:** these commonly go missing and the oil cap mysteriously loosens. Alternatively you can put a retaining cable on each to keep them close by.
* **Valve stem tool:** this has saved my bacon once and I'll never load up without it, easily replace a valve stem without removing the wheel. Search amazon for "Quick Tire Valve Stem Core Change" that includes a small plastic funnel and handle to push a new stem in from the outside. Grab a few known good valve stems from your favorite tire shop the next time you get fresh rubber mounted up.

4. Driver Comfort & Ergonomics
A fatigued driver makes mistakes, misses flags, and damages equipment. Prioritize the cockpit interface.
* **Seat and Harness Fitment:** If running multiple drivers of varying heights, invest in a high-quality, heavy-duty seat slider or a modular foam insert system (this is preferred, aka SFI rated foam kits) to ensure everyone achieves proper pedal and steering wheel reach.
* **Exhaust heat:** this is really bad on NA/NB where the exhaust routes down that side, I recommend an air gap exhaust insulation and if you can pull the trans, installing a similar air gap insulation to the underside of the trans tunnel like the DEI Floor & Tunnel Shield II 21" x 24"
* **Hydration & Cooling:** Install a permanent water bottle holder with a long straw within easy reach of the driver, and/or integrate a hardwired cool-suit system.
* **Communication: Ensure your radio harness wiring is secured cleanly away from the shifter and steering column. If running series that utilize electronic flagging systems (like Flagtronics in ChampCar), mount the display directly in the driver's primary line of sight alongside critical gauges (Water Temp, Oil Pressure).
* **Gauges: mount them so that the normal way they point is straight up, that way it's easy to see if something is not right. Lights are even better. Drivers are super busy and should be able to glance at something to determine quickly if there's an issue or not.
